Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., have received a cable message from their London office announcing the death of Mr Joseph Dowling, a member of the Board of Directors in London. The Westminster Gazette states'that the Hon. Joan v Dickson-Poynder, the thirteen-year-old daughter of Lord and Lady Islington has written an historical play on the subject of Mario Antoinette. It will probably Iks produced at Government House, Wellington, and the authoress has cast herself for the leading part.
' The remains of the late Mr Robert Johnstone, junr., .were intered in the Masterton cemetery on Saturday afternoon,. The funeral cortege was yery lengthy, including most of the settlers jof the district. The ceremony at the j graveside was conducted by the Rev. |A. T. Thompson, B.A;, B.D.
The death occurred-on Thursday last, ' at tlie age of sixty-rdiglit, of Mr John i Goddard, the proprietor of the wellj known Havelock Nurseri&s, and one of I the oldest, settlers of Hawke's Bay. ■i Mr F. Edward Lamb is resigning his i pasition with the Masterton Borough j Council, owing to his having been sel- ' ected out of forty-two applicants for the position of assistant-Town Clerk to the Borough of Dannevirke. He expects to leave. Masterton to take up bis new duties early next month. Mr Lamb, who lias been with the Borough Council for 2| years, will also resign his position of drawing instructor at the local technical school.
The friends of Mr R. D. Knight, the well-known horse breeder, of Ivarcre, will regret to hear that lie had the misfortune to be kicked by a horse belonging to a consignment he was shipping at Wellington on Friday, and was somewhat severely injured. He is now at his home, bufc.it will be some days before he will bo able to get. about. *"
