FIRST DAY'S PLAY

ADELAIDE, March 10. Owing to the late arrival of the South Africans in Adelaide, the start of the match with South Australia was delayed till two o'clock. The weather and wicket were perfect, and the attendance was 1500. Hill won the toss, and Mayno and Dolling opened to Llewellyn and Sinclair. Runs came steadily. Schwarz replaced Llewellyn at 25, and in his second over disposed of Mayne. Hill partnered Dolling, and 50 appeared on the board in 45 minutes. Llewellyn relieved 1 Sinclair. Dolling was easiily stumped at 70, after he had played a good innings for 45. Three runs later, Gehrs played a ball on to his wicket. Crawford joined Hill. The latter vigorously compiled 50 in 64 minutes, while Crawford batted steadily. Just before the tea adjournment Hill pulled a ball to the on, where Snooko accept-

ed. He batted 71 minutes for his 57 runs, hitting one four. With the score at 157, Roy Hill was clean bowled by Nourse. Thirty-five runs later Crawford tipped a ball into the slips, Snooke holding/the catch. He batted 72 minutes for his 57, hitting nine fours. Rees and Webster were the only remaining batsmen to make a stand, the others giving'no trouble. The innings closed for 240 runs. Zulch and Commaillo opened for South Africa. The former played very steadily ,but the latter was beaten by Whitty at 9. With his next ball Whitty clean bowled Strieker, and a few runs later Pegler met with the same end.
