Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 1911. BOY IMMIGRANTS.

Ma- Sedgwick, who recently introduced fifty boy immigrants to iho Dominion, to follow farming pursuits, is (touring the country and enfdeavouring to impress upon, -farmers the great service they would be rendering • themselves and the Empire by importing further batches of English city yor.ths. The enthusiasm of Mr Sedgwick in what is un•doubtadlly a charitable /cause is woifthy of all commendation. At the same time, it should be pointed out that New Zealand owes a duty to it's own children.. There are scoreis and scores of able-bodied lads in the towns and cities l of the Dominion who would be admirably adapted for country pursuits if they could only be induced to leave the centres and do a little bit of f'roughing" at a reasonable pay. The boys of tiiis Dominion, however, are being spoon-fed. They have been taught that hones* toil is a relic of Itlhe dark' ages, and something whidh should be despised. They are being educated to regard life as a period of recreation, when at given . intervaJis. between, football matches and msals they may Be pefrmdtted to calculate the profits of (tlheir employers. There is something wrofnig with the social isystam which permits this sort of tiling. The system will have to bo altered, or Mr Sedgwick. will import enough, boy 3to squeeze tho young New Zealander out of exislfcence.
