WORKERS' DWELLINGS.

GOVERNMENT ADVANCES."

ENQUIRIES BY MR HOGG, t

'I Workers from time to time have beemmaking enquiry' a bout, 'the facilities '.offered by the Government for' enaoling them to become their own landlords. .'A promise has beenlhekV out that by paying a deposit of £lO, a worker' would he enabled to secure< a home.ipr himself. ' At the request,, of| some-, of his constituents,., Mr A-..; W.'Hogg has been 'making enquiry.' as to the terms find odHdffions on wihich the necessary assistance can •be secured. It sthJit this method of providing homes is under the; Workers Dwellings Branch of the Labour Department, and,the Advances -to Workers Office has, no-' thing to do with it. To take advan-( tage of the deposit system a number of workers roust, combine and apply to the head of. the Labour Department, who, if the scheme is approved of, will acquire a suitable blockof land and erect dwellings for the applicants. The deposit required is £ 10, and afterwards payment for land and building's can be made hy" easy.instalments. From this it will be'seen that the workers' are not furnished -withl;money' and. allowed, to erect their own 'buildings, but must accept the laud and buildings supplied them by the Department. , Under the Advances to Workers scheme money is lent both for the erection and acquisition of dwellings, and an advance is made to the extent- of three-fouj-ths pi' their' value.. This advance- however, cloesnot include the value of the land on which the are situated —it is simply made on the value of the buildings themselves, quite apart from the building sites. This explanation will remove a considerable amount'of'misapprehension and disappointment' on the pant of applicant® in Masterton and elsewhere who have been unable to obtain any- , thing like the amount of loans they I have been applying for.
