AUCKLAND/ Last Night. W. Osborne was. charged at the Police Court with manslaughter in connection with the death of Mary Gilchrist residing in White street. : Sub-Inspector Hendry stated that the woman led an immoral life •■ and kept accused in idleness. On December 20th the accused beat-her so badly that her body was bruised and 'two ribs broken. The accused was tried for assault, when the woman tried to make out that the assault was her fault, and not the fault of the prisoner; But/the prisoner, who pleaded guilty, was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. On January 7th the woman was found'dead, and-;a post mortem examination- showed that death resulted from rupture of , a blood vessel accelerated-by broken ribs, but the condition of her body, was such that she could not have lived long in any case.
