ST. MATTHEWS VICARAGE.
ADDITIONS AND ALTERATIONS,
A meeting of St'. Matthew's parishioners was held in the Sunday Schoolroom last night.' The Rev. H. Watson presided, and there were about fifty persons present. * . . ■■: The chairman stated that towards the end of last year the Vestry had considered the question of alterations and addition to the vicarage. It was' generally recognised that improvements would need to be made, no matter who might be the vicar. The Vestry agreed that plans and estimates of the requirements should be obtained, and these had been supplied . by Messrs Varnham and Rose. Tenders were called, and the lowest was £l5O in excess of. the amount the Vestry felt justified in expending. The plans were then modified and fresh prices obtained for the work. The Vestry now came before the meeting to ask authority to expend a sum on the work not exceeding £6OO. j Mr Galwey moved and Mr Blackman seconded that authority be given! the Vestry totexpend a sum not exceeding £6OO in 'additions and alterations to the vicarage. After some discussion, Dr. Hosking moved as an amendment that it be a recommendation to the Vestry to convert the existing buildings into sfables and loft, aiid that the vestry be given authority to spend.£l2oo in the erection of a new vicarage. He said he felt sure the Vestry would re--ceiye the support of the parish in finding: the money. A sum of :£IOO he knew of was available for the work, and; other: donations -, *ould/ ;'; follow;;! (Applause). ,':».■: :'!/,• .'/^v.-V'''•'/ ■':".'!:'!.' Mr Btackman, churchwarden, explained the financial position, and said |h© vestry had agreed that £450 might i |be expended in improving the vicarI age, and they coukl see their way to the repayment of this- sum in four or; fiveyears." The tenders were in excess of the estimate,; and they had to ask j the parishioners for authority to expend £6OO. M Much as they would like to build a new vicarage,* it was felt the present time was riot opportune. The matter was further discussed, ,and, in reply to Dr. Hosking the vicar said the proposed alterations to* the vicarage would be quite satisfactory to him, whereupon, the mover, by permission, withdrew his amendment. The motion was then put and carried.', ' . ' ■■■ ', ;•. Mr Blackman announced, amid applause, that two sums of £SO each were promised towards the vicarage improvement fund,; and cheers followed ah intimation through Mr Galwey that Dr."-and, Mrs Hoskihf? would donate £IOO to the fund. ■'; '<"/';f .■" ' Tlie chairman expressed: his gratis tude'tothe: donors; arid said no doubt their example would induce others to come forward liberally. The mee|ing closed , in. the usual form. '"-''":
