THE BOROUGH ENGINEER.

MR MANSFIELD'S RESIGNATION ACCEPTED. ... QUESTION OF A . SUCCESSOR. At the meeting of tJie Mastertou Borough Council last evening, the Town Clerk and Engineer (Mr W. T. Mansfield) forwarded his resignation. ..The resignation was", read by the Mayor' as follows:—'.'l beg to tenresignation as Town Clerk ;and. the various other'offices in connection with the position which I have held since October, 1907, owing to the fact that I have been appointed engineer to the Wanganui Borough Council. I would be glad to be relieved of my duties as soon as possible.— (Signed) W- T. MANSFIELD." The Mayor expressed his regret at the fact that Mr Mansfield had tendered his resignation. During Mr Mansfield's term of office he had been twice Mayor, and his (the Mayor's) work had been very easy. The Town Clerk's work had always been very satisfactory as far as the Mayor was He had devoted "a great deal of time to the Borough: The speaker ..said he was pleased, that Mr MansfteM was. going where'he would have more scope for his abilities. Most v- of "the Borough works""at present in hand would be completed at about the end of this month. A -great deal of attention had been paid to the works, and they wore all on a fairly sound footing. The Mayor moved that the Engineer be.relieved of his duty at the end of the present month, and that he be allowed his salai*y to the end of 'the month of March as a bonus. CrEwington did not'agree "to the bonus being granted. Cr Prentice was prepared to support the, motion, stating that the ! bonus was well earned. : _Cr Hoar also supported the yio- | tion,which wa« carried. ;i /■-, Pr Temple moved and Cr .Morris j seconded that Mr^Sane' be appointed'! acting Town Clerk ;v. rj -,'ChvHoar proposed as an amend-? Cr Elliott . suggested v . that the Maybr< would have a lot of work, and a committee should bo, set up to as-i sist him. ■ Cr Temple moved that the Mayor, Crs Pragnell, _Ewington, .-and the mover be appointed a Works Com-, mittee as long as is found necessary. Cr Morris seconded the motion, . which was carried 1 . ; The Mayor moved that immediate,] steps be taken to call applications/! for the position of Town; Cleric and •[ Engineer combined, details of sal-, ary, etc., to be considered later, .... . Cr Prentice seconded the,motion. ! Cr'-Morris'-moved, as an amendment that the .matter bo held over until, the next ordinary meeting of the" Council. Cr Elliott seconded the amend- I ment. The Mayor, with the consent of the seconder, withdrew his motion in favour of the amendment, but he stated thai it was only shirking responsibility in postponing tho. matter. The amendment then .became the, motion. / ■ •' •• ■ Cr Hoar moyed as a. further amendment that immediate stops be taken to fill the vacant position. No Councillor seconded this amendment, and the motion was carried.
