MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, there being present— Crs. J. Elliott (in the chair), W. Pragnell, R. Rigg, W. '-Morns, J. Prentice, and F. W. Temple. Apologies for absence were received from jiis Worship the Mayor (Mr J. M. Coradine) and Cr. J. C. Ewington. ' '
A letter was received from the Borough Solicitor, Mr C. A., Pown'sl.il, witlr regard to a defaulting ratepayer.— It was decided to hold the matter over for future consideration.
Mr Donald* Donald wrote accepting the Council's, terms with the purchase of a gravel pit near the railway bridge over the Waipoua river. The Wairarapa Employers' Association wrote asking if the Borough Council was going to recognise their Holiday Committee.— On the motion of &• Prentice, it was resolved to recognise the Committee, owing . to the fact that it had been of great assistance to the Council, .:' A letter was received from Messrs Hollings and Pragnell, applying for. permission to open a right-of-way by the 'side of the fire station.— The Engineer was instructed to report on the matter; ' '■•-'■/:••' ■ Correspondence was received from D. Donald and G. Shaw, asking permission to erect water troughs in their sections for the use of •stock.— Permission was granted, subject to water meters being installed, as provided by the by-law. An application was received from .Pinhey Bros, for an increase in their '-.witter supply. The letter stated that there was at present a half-inch pipe to the stables, and they asked that an inch pipe be installed. '

A. : E. 'Franks wrote asking the Council to supply him with a; quantity of crushed metal.—- The Engineer- reported having refused to sxipply the metal.— Cr Pragnell stated if there, was enough metal in stock ■ there, was' no reason why it should not he supplied,; but if there was not it would hardly.be advisable to start the ,machinery for the purpose of a few yards.— Cr Temple stated that-the Council ought to make a profit out of anything they could. Ho saw no reason why metal should iiot.be supplied to ratepayers. In fact, it would, be a good idea to mix tar and, sell dt,"thus giving the people a chance to oeautify their own proper.ti.es. He moved that the application) be granted.—, Cr Morris seconded the Cr Bigg stated that (to carry the motion would give' anybody arid everybody the' right to apply'for metal arid expect to get it. He-also thought that the action, of the Engineer in refusing it should be confirmed, otherwise they were voting against their own officer.— With the seconder's permission, Temple withdrew Jiis motion, and the matter dropped.
Cr Morris asked the Engineer for a report concerning a conflagration that took place at the Borough tar works The Engineer stated that there was little or no damage done. The- fire was evidently caused by the ignition of naphtha gas. The Town Clerk reported that complaints had been mad© with regard to the nuisance caused by cattle being driven along Kuripuni Street.— It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the -Works Committee to deal with.
Accounts amounting to £213 4s 8d were passed for payment.
