WITNESSES' VIEWS. LOSS .DUE'TO ACCIDENT. (Received January 31 10.20 a.m.) LONDON, January 30. At the Waratah enquiry (resumed), Lund, junior, was recalled by counsel and pressed-to say why ho accepted the designers' opinion of the stability of the Waratah, in preference to that of Captain llbery, when urging a demurrage claim. Witness Mas unable to say, or to remember, what Ilbery said about the rejection of his opinion.
William Lund gave evidence that he had nob heard of the Waratah being wanting in stability. Captain. Ilbery watched the. building of the ship. He was unable to account for his absence from the important heeling experiments.
Steel, a naval architect, testified that he was satisfied with the stability- of the ship. . He believed the loss was due to accident. . It was inconceivable that the ship capsized unless the water got in.
