Mi- F. C. Tumor has been asked to become a candidate for the Mayoralty of Eketahuna.
Mr Harry Hal], of Masterton, made a great "hit" at the Dannevirke Highland Society's gathering one evening last week.
Inspector Hugo arrives in Masterton to-day, and will inspect the Fire Brigade and Fire Police to-night.
Mr Barclay Hector has been appointed University Registrar, vice Mr J. W. Joynt, who resigned last year.
The death is announced by cable of the Revi Samuel McFarlane, a New Guinea missionary. • '
The death occurred a*, j? ox ton last week of Mr William Wright, a pioneer settler, at the age of 75. r ' Mr Joseph McCluggage has been selected as the Liberal candidate for the Stratford seat at the coming election, against Mr Hine. At the Sacred Heart Bascilica, Wellington, on Thursday last, Mr W. Matthews, of Eketahuna, was married to Miss M. Gates, of the same township. Mr M. Fitzgerald was best man. Mr A. E. Rowden, of Wanganui, will replace the late Mr Calcott in the Christchurch office of the Agricultural Department, and Mr Hooper, of Wellington, will succeed Mr Rowden. The friends of Mr D. B. Thompson, of Masterton, will regret to hear that lie is confined to the local Hospital with an attack of pleurisy.
Mr Lewin, of Lyttelton, has been appointed Town Clerk of Dunedin. There were thirty-eight applicants for the position, which carries a salary of £6OO per annum. A Christchurch telegram, received last night, stated that Major-General Godley arrived at that city on Saturday and attended a Church parade with the garrison yesterday morning. He afterwards visited Lincoln College.
Mr L. H. Lewis, superintendent of the Masterton St. John Ambulance Brigade, delivered a lecture to a number of members of the Martinborough Fire Board, on Wednesday evening last, on first aid to the injured, resuscitation in cases of drowning, and several other useful matters.
Mr Bert. Potter, who for the past five years has been, connected with the grocery department of the W.F.C.A., was on Saturday evening last the recipient of a handsome silver-mounted and engraved walking-stick ' and sovereign case from his fellow employees, upon severing his connection with the firm, in order to.proceed to Australia.
