CAPETOWN, January 27.
Viscount Gladstone, GovernorGeneral of South Africa, has reprieved four Rhodesian natives who were condemned to death for murder—three of them for the tribal custom of killing, twins. . Tilonko and other Zulu chiefs, who were, imprisoned at St. Helena for participation in the 1906 rebellion, have been released.
(Received Last Night, 5.5 o'clock.) CAPETOWN, January 28.
The facts concerning the reprieved native arc that a woman and her four children were living at Umtali. Ii the absence of her husband, a powerful native, who had previously been in the employ of the family, entered a window and found his way to tjie bedroom, where a prolonged struggle ensued. The native again entered the house, but found the bedroom barricaded. He had been drinking. Viscount Gladstone, in reply to Rhodesian protests, states that, after reviewing the evidence, lie commuted the death sentence .to penal servitude for life because there was a distinct doubt. It was impossible to conclude that rape, had actually been committed. Viscount Gladstone's view is fortified by the op inion of the Judge that he would have preferred a verdict of "assault with intent." Viscount Gladstone concluded that the crime was not premeditated. The accused, presumably, entered the house to get food and drink. ,
