The newspaper "The Globe," in an article on ''Australian Development," say's the most sceptical of Australians must admit that it was worth while appointing a High Commissioner, inasmuch as Britain had heard more about Australia since Sir George Reid's arrival than ever before. The result was a perceptible lift to emigration. It was understood far and wide that Australia'was desirous of adding to its population. .There was no such prejudice in Australia against Englishmen as existed in Canada, where it was often announced, English need apply." "We hear good accounts," adds the Globe, "of settlers in Australia. No advertisement equals private home letters from contented settlers.
