ENGINEER'S REPORT. A QUESTION OF METERS. At the meeting of the committee of the Masterton Borough Council, held last evening, the Engineer, (Mr Vt. T. Mansfield)"reported that in about three weeks the tarmac surface coating would be finished. He: also reported having looked into the statement made by Or Temple that •there were ii number of; water meters on-the Upper Plain not in use, for ! which, so far as -his information served him, there was no foundation. Regarding the request of the Solway Syndicate that the Borough should take dedication of some 5-J- chains of unformed road, a continuation of York. Street to the.BoroughJs southera boundary, the Engineer reported j'that.'in his opinion, to accede to the request would be equal the syndicate a present of £220, thesum :which ultimately the ratepayers of the Borough would have to provide. Oa the motion of the Majorat was decided that the Council was not in a position to take over the road above referred to, at the present time. Cr Temple stated with regard to his allegation regarding the water meters on the Upper Plain Road, that he did not intend to withdraw his .statement which he had reason to make. Ho said that the meters were .not being used to advantage, not. that they were hot being used at all. There were, a large number of residents on the Upper Plain Road' paying 25s for water rate, and not using over the prescribed amount for 255. In this case meters were quite unnecessary. The Mayor stated that Cr Temple said that the meters were not in use, and that his explanation quite a different 1 phase 1 ' on the question. '..!'/''*> Cr PragheU' "stated that if there were meters which did not register 25s worth of water and 25s was paid, the Borough was doing good business. .. Cr. Temple said Cr. Pragnell. did not know what he was talking about. The minimum amount payable for wafer was 255. Cr Prentice said that he was of opinion- that any complaints Councillors had should be made at the meeting, and Cr Temple had done this, and the matter might now drop. , ( The Engineer stated that he had sent a member of his staff round the } houses, and the report brought back was to the effect that no,meters of which a record was not hold had been found.
