The New Zealand mare Crucihella was among the starters for the Hopetoun Cup, but not being sufficiently forward in condition failed to gain a place. Horses already well backed for the Wellington Cup are Birkdale, Los Angelos, Danube and Miss Mischief. J'he Hon. J. D. Ormond's Ivithara has been withdrawn from racing, and win be sent to the stud. Kopu has been suffering from muscle soreness, but has now recovered, and may be ready to race prominently in the Wellington Cup. Wairoto, by Conqueror-Waipnna, lias been sold by Mr- S. Messena to Mrs G. West, of Palmerston. A one time good performer, Penrose, died at Te Mahnnga, Hawke's Bay, last week. Ho was a full brother to Primula. - Thirteen yearlings by Soult sold at Auckland last week realised 2725 guineas. Sir George Clifford's team for the Wellington meeting will consist of Counterfeit,- Avarice, Big Blast, Nithdale, Husbandman, Countermine, Tenterhook, Sharpshooter, and True Knight. It is not yet known whether Mr G. D. Greenwood's representative in fhe Wellington Cup will be Danube or Miss Mischief. - The Whakataki Hack Race Meeting, to be held at Castlepoint on February 4th, is sure to attract a large gathering of the public, as past fixtures' have been well conducted and are very popular with sportsmen. The programme consists of seven, events, the. principal race being the Castlepoint Cup, of 25 sovs., which will be run over a mile. The other distances will be verysuitable, the Bracelet being seven furlongs, Maiden Hack six furlongs, Scurry four furlongs, Whakataki Handicap five furlongs, and Tinui Handicap one mile. The officials may be depended upon to have the general arrangements in connection with the meeting in first-class order. Entries are due on 2Cth inst., and weights will be published on 23rd < inst. |

The Dannevirke Racing Club will hold its autumn meeting on March Bth and 9th. The sum of £I6OO vjtll be given in stakes for the two days, and this stamps the Club as a progressive one. ._e principal event, the Dannevirke Cup, is worth £250, and the Autumn Handicap £±6o. The distances of the various events will also find favour with owners and trainers, and there should be a very satisfactory list of nominations on February 11th. With Mr J. E. Henrys as handicapper, Mr W. H., Hartgill as judge, and Mr R. H. Skipwith starter, these responsible positions are well filled, while tte secretary and other officials may be depended upon to carry out the general arrangements as satisfactorily as ever.
