LABOUR AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
The Labour Party in New Zealand is manifesting a lively interest in municipal matters just now. It lias decided to run candidates in April next in nearly all the cities and larger towns. This is as it should be. Local government has been too long neglected in this country. Nobody, excepting the man with the axe to grind, has displayed much concern for the control of municipalities. The result is to be seen in the wretchedly unkempt appearance of many of our important townships. If the activity of the Labour Party should result in the quickening of interest in local government, it will have achieved a very useful purpose. The labouring classes have, of course, every right to representation on our civic bodies, and the experience they gain hero should serve them well should they ultimately become a political factor in the land.
