DISCUSSING THE ESTIMATES. AN ITEM RULE; ,±\ (Received Last Night, 9.30 o'clock.) SYDNEY, December 22. In the Legislative Assembly, which had been sitting all night, the Speaker left the chair at 3.40, and returned at 11 a.m. The loan estimates, providing for an expenditure of £4,933,000, were then proceeded with. An item of £50,000 for State brickworks was ruled out of order, as the law states that a work costing more than £20,000 cannot he proceeded with without following ascertain procedure. The Minister for Works stated that the sum mentioned-was" required for more than one works. The Chairman's ruling was dissented from, and the matter was reported to the Speaker," who upheld the ruling. The item was thereupon struck out. - The Hon. Mr Griffiths, Minister for Works, declared that he would start the brickworks just the same. The estimates, with this elimination, were passed. .
