ATTACK ON FRENCH FORGE. DEFENDERS' HEAVY LOSS. Received December 9, 8.30 a.m. PARIS, December 8, Details of the Wadai disaster, in the French Soudan, show that Colonel Moll's force, who repulsed an attack by the Sultan's of Massalit and Wabai, hut with heavy loss, numbered 300.
Colonel Moll, four other officers, and for+y men were killed, and four officers and sixty-nine men wounded. The assailants, who numbered about 5000, left 600 dead on the field. The trouble is attributed to the insufficient number of troops. It appears there are only 600 defenders for a territory equalling four-fifths ol France, and 6000 for the entire area, including the Lake Chad country, which is the size of France.
the French expect further diffi-
culties in the same region until the Anglo-Egpytian Government resolves to establish order at Eariur. SLAVE-RAIDERS AT WORK. ARMS IMPORTED VIA TRIPOLI. Received December 9, 9.20 a.m. LONDON, December 8. The Paris correspondent of The Times states that Damar advices are to the effect that Damar and slaveraiders who were expelled from the Egyptian Soudan continue their evil trade with Tripoli, via Borku. Turkish patrols have been sent to the northward of the French posts at Bilma. Moreover, quick-firing rifles imported via Tripoli and Tibesti, in the Soudan, have . been seized at Wadai. There are indications that certain Turkish elements, inspired by influences inimical to Franee, are seeking to foment tiouble in the Central Soudan. The Times trusts that the Porte will severely discountenance the movement. ;
