DECLINED, WITH THANKS.
The Government had placed a sum of £l5O on the Supplementary EstN mates as an. allowance to Mr W. M. Tvers, Inspector of Taxes, for having successfully prosecuted certain taxpayers for evasionsthe income tax. Mr Tyers lia's respectfully declined the reward, on the ground that no officer of the Department should have any direct financial interest in any assessment.'; The action of the Inspector will be applauded ,by every man ill the community who has a respect for public morality. He has set an example which those in high places might well follow. The system of rewarding public men for k doinr' :lut- ba>s assumed dan-
gerous proportions in this Dominion, and it is only by the actions of conscientious men like Mr Tyers that it will be kept in check.
