STATE COAL MINES.

At a time when the Parliament of New South Wales is talking seriously of nationalizing the mineral resources of that State, it comes as an unexpected surprise to find the New Zealand Government refusing to go. further in the matter of nationalizing its coal deposits. A Brunner deputation which waited upon the Prime Minister and the Minister for Mines on Saturday was told that the Government would not start another mine, at anyrate on the West Coast. The general public, with its usual inquisitiveness, will be tempted to ask the reason why. If the State Coal enterprise is the success the Government would have us believe, and if it secures cheap coal for the public, why should its operations be restricted? Why should not the whole industry be nationalized? The Prime Minister, or the Minister for Mines, may be able to supply the reason. They certainly did not attempt to give a reason to the deputation which waited upon them from Brunner.
