A STRANGE POSITION.
The Government, will find itself in a yery awkward position if it pays £650 to the N.Z. Farmers' Co-oper-ative Distributing Company, as is proposed. The Government, it will be remembered/ was mulct in £2OO by the Supreme Court for creating a nuisance at the State Coal depot , which interfered with a building > owned by the Distributing Company. The Court did not issue an injunction (because it could not),' and the .Government continued to carry on its coal business, though it endeavoured to minimise the nuisance. If a payment of £650 is now made on account cf additional damage, it points at once to the conclusion that the business of the State has been carried on in a very extraordinary manner. The House will surely not allow a sum of £650 to be paid away in the manner proposed without enquiring who is to blame for the loss.
