NOTES ON THE RACING.
Only four lined out for the Hack Hurdles. Whakaweira was made a solid favourite ,aud won practically from end to end without being extended. British Rifle ran a good race, but Gaelic did not show up prominently. A nice racing field of eleven faced the starter for the Belvedere Hack Handicap. Lord Possible and Merrie Frank were well backed, the firstnamed being a much stronger order than he was at the Masterton meeting. Merrie Frank got the best of a fair despatch, and without being seriously extended won easily from Lord Possible and Merrie Goer.
For the Railway Handicap Sunlion net was supported down to a very short price. The start was a poor one, the favourite jumping out quickly, with Purakau second and Merchantman and Gold Battery running third. This was the order throughout, but Hearing the post Merchantman got up in time to beat Purakau by a head for second place. Sunbonnet, nicely ridden by R. Hatch, was never seriously threatened at anv uart of the race.
The smallest field of the day—three —went out to contest the AYairarapa Hack Guineas. Naturally the San Fran—Spring mare, Rill, was made a strong favourite, the pencillovs offering very small odds on what they termed "the moral." Rill, accompanied by British Maid, made the pace fast. The Merrie England filly raced the, distance out well, and Rill had to be kept right up to her work to win by half a length. The winner was afterwards led on to the lawn and decorated with the blue ribbon.
The field of eleven capable performers for the County Cup attracted plenty of attention: Clemora was the popular fancy. His appearance warranted this, but in his preliminary he appeared to move rather short. Rauparaha was perspiring freely while in the bird cage. The remaining nine contestants were in fine racing condition. Vi and Penza were in front for over a mile, but at the business end Rauparaha and Mataari put in fine runs, and fin-ished-first and second. Iranui, the winner of the Masterton Cup, rati a very poor race, being last all the way, while Clemora finished in the centre of the field. Embrocation made a runaway race ot the Maungaraki Hack, but was caught in the final stages by First Consul, who won by a. head.
Ebonite was the popular selection for the Trial Plate, backers caring little whether he got away, well or otherwise in the Held of seventeen. As it happened the start was a very uneven one, the favourite being well back at the critical time, and although ho raced through the field could not get up nearer than third. Portcullis, the winner, was all the better for racing at Masterton, and •Royal Knight, by Knight Errant— Torowai, who finished second, shows promise. Kilsvth, the last backed but one in the' Gladstone Welter, won in good style from Contour and- the Favourite Eiya. Vite, who finished fourth, was blocked in the staright, and had to be pulled out. The largest dividend of the day was paid out on Kilsyth, who is a stable companion to the Cup winner Rauparalia. TO-D AY' S "ACCEPT AXCES. (Bx Telegraph— .Special to the Age.)
