AFFAIRS IN NEW HEBRIDES. WELLINGTON, Last Night. A deputation representing the Foreign Missions Committee of the Presbyterian Church waited on the Premier to-day in connection with the Presbyterian Mission in the New Hebrides, it was explained by otic of the speakers that a convention had been drawn some years ago, the recruiting of natives and sale of intoxicating liquor. The deputation declared that the convention, in that respect, was constantly violated, chiefly by French residents. The recruiting of women, and girls was particularly complained of. A letter was read from T)r Bowie, missionary, who said that the charges against French residents had either not been enquired into or, if enquiries were made, inadequate penalties or no peunlfies at all had been inflicted. Sir' .Joseph Ward, in reply, said the it.e.Uer was of very great important- j. If the deputation would forward him a memorandum on the subject he- would send it on to the British Government. The deputation agreed to do this. PETROLEUM AT NEW PLYMOUTH. NEW PLYMOUTH, Last Night. The manager of the Standard Company reports tlmt at 3,030 feet, in the Carriugton Road bo?-e, he passed' through a seam of oil and gas in the sand. After drilling through the sandstone seam he is now in blue clay, at '3050 feet, which he regards as highly encouraging. The bore is now clear of the obstacles, which, have long hindered drilling. ALLEGED ASSAULT AND ROBBERY. REEFTON, Last' Night. An assault, with robbery of £3O from one J. Jolly, occurred at Globe Hill. Three young men were charged at the Police Court to-day, and remanded for eight days. The accused lately came from Sydney.
