DISTRICT NEWS.

CARTERTON* Mr Harry Catt, a popular member of the Carterton Gun Club, was the recipient of a beautiful case of Loowo pipes* on Thursday afternoon. The presentation was made by the members to show their appreciation of his many years' service as a referee and handicapper, and the time lie lias devoted to the welfare of the club. An unfortunate accident happened to a delivery cart belonging to Messrs Buzzard Bros., bakers, at' Gladstone yesterday. From particulars available, it appears that Mr C Whitford was driving the cart, and was accompanied by his wife, and two children. During Mr Whitford's absence at a house, somebody startled the horse, and it bolted, throwing Mrs Whitford and the children out, the former sustaining a fractured wrist, and the latter were somewhat shaken and bruised. The horse also suffered injury. Dr Smyth attended to the iniurv sustained by Mrs Whitford. A well-known local cyclist sustained i! nasty spill from his bicycle yesterday afternoon at the railway gates. He was riding a strange cycle, and not knowing that the brake acted true, clinched it with much force, with the result that it stopped the machine .suddenly, and shot the rider over the front. He sustained a bruised knee, and skin abrasions on the hands. The Dalefield Dairy Company are receiving 6000 gallons of milk daily, and are working a night shift. TE WHARAU. The weather in this district still continues dry, and although rain fell last week, and there wei-c showers during the first day or two, the country lias not benefited much owing to the winds which followed. A dealer passing through to-day expressed the opinion that he has seldom seen the land on this side the Maungarakis so dry and short of feed. Practically all the slieds in this district have commenced shearing, and good average clips are expected. What with metalling contracts and shea'.ing, work is very plentiful here at lire sent. The County Council have a good number of men engaged on the roads here at present, and settlers in the district should feel the benefit next winter. Messrs Evans and Hubbard, Stock Inspectors, were in this district last week. Poisoning operations will commence after shearing. A number of Londoners now- residing in this district intend holding a re-union dinner here on Saturday evening, when it is expected that' a good number of Homelanders will be present. A fair number of people from Te Wharau visited the Carterton Showlast week. Miss Campion, of Wnnganui, is spending a few weeks at "Brackenfield." Mrs Hulme, of Blenheim, is at. present residing in Te Wharau. Mr Smith, of Flemiugton, Australia, is sojourning here for a few weeks.
