INDEPENDENCE OF MAGISTRATES.
WELLINGTON, Last Night. Hon. Dr Findlay, Minister for Justice, interviewed regarding the statements made by Mr H. W. Northcroft, S.M., in Auckland yesterday, said he was utterly at a loss to understand Mr Northcroft's remarks. They came as an absolute surprise to him. Dining his tenure of office as Minister for Justice no suggestion had ever reached him of anything of -->e kind. He had on occasions been .writen to by persons in connection with cases before the court, but had a: all times uniformly refused to take any action whatever in the procedure. 'T am quite ur.able to understand Mr northcroft's remarks, and can only ask him to mention any circumstances which would bear out his statements," added the Minis-* ter, "for I know my predecessor in ofhVo was just as careful as I have been to see that no outside influence, political or otherwise, is 1 allowed to interfere w'th our judicial system."
