THE MEIKLE CASE.

The Prime Minister lia3 intimated his intention of placing a sum of money on the supplementary estimates as compensation to Mr ,1. J. Meikle. It is to be hoped that Parliament will not follow the course adopted two years ago, and strike out the item. The amount should he such that, whilst it would vindicate the country, it would not be regarded as a windfall to a man who has adopted anything but reasonable methods to establish his claim. A payment of £IOOO would, no doubt, satisfy all parties. Parliament and the comitry are tired of the Meikle business, and a settlement on the terms indicated would come as a relief to the public conscience in more wavs than one.
