THE JUDGES AND POLITICS.
Mr Massey stated in the House of Representatives on Friday night that there seemed to be a tendency on the part of Judges to mix up with politics. This is rather a serious assertion to make, and one which will create uneasiness in the minds of the public. When, a Judge at Auckland commented some little while back upon the law as it affected bookmakers, he Avas applauded by the newspapers of the Dominion. Few people troubled to think that the Judge might have been exceeding his functions by traversing the legislation of the country. And yet this is what he was doing in reality. The reputation of the Judges of this Dominion for independence and impartiality is foiv tunately high, and it would he a pity if this were spoiled by indiscreet utterances from the ' Supreme. Court Bench.
