TOBACCONISTS AND HOTELS.
The tobacconists of Palmerston North have protested against the practice of hotelkeepers selling cigars and cigarettes over the bar, and have threatened to vote "Nolicense" unless the practice is discontinued. There can he no doubt that the tobacconists have good cause for complaint. Most of them have high rents to pay, and they are compelled to close their establishments at an eary hour in the evening. It must be most annoying to them to find the hotelkeepers entering into competition with them in the cigar and cigarette business. The Legislature might be induced to insert a short clause in the Licensing Bill prohibiting the traffic in goods which does not legitimately come within the scope of the hotel trade.
