CHINESE TRADE.
A correspondent in this issue draws attention to the way in which Chinese tradesmen in Masterton are patronised by the wives and daughters of European workers. The anomaly of working-men 011 the one hand protesting against Chinese labour being employed in the ordinary handicrafts, and 011 the other supporting them when they enter into competition with European tradespeople, is altogether too glaring. If ever the Chinaman becomes a serious menace to this Dominion, it will be the result of the gross inconsistency of those who ask credit from the white man and pay cash to the black.
