THE ARGENTINE.
IMPRESSIONS 0F MR E. SHORT.
A batch of Argentine papers received by P.sr R. S. Abrahams, of Palmerston North, contain a great deal of interest regarding New Zealand's chief competitor, and a good deal >:y way of aftermalh of the International Show. '1 hey incidentally contain Mr Ernest Short's views upon the show and the stock thereat, but especially the Romneys. Mr Short's'life story is given at length from the"time when he went to Parg i orangi at the age of 15 to manage the farm for his uncle that he has since acquired, added to and made famous, and he gave 'the interviewer particulars of . his £IOO prize for the Manawatu A. and P. Show by way of illustration of Romney conditions for the Fouth American Shows. Mr Short thought the Argentine breeders paid too little attention to the head, legs and feet in their Romneys, which were "tremendously weak" in the legs. He, however, entnused over the Shorthorns, which he regarded as "magnificent," and he very much doubted whether for quality and numbers the display at Palermo could be equalled anywhere else in the world. He liked the Herefords also, but considered they wanted mora bone. It is when we come to the way that this magnificent exhibit of cattle was treated by the ers that we find the greatest difference between the methods of Argentina and of New Zealand, and while we cannot hope to introduce the whole of the Argentine methods in that particular regard here, there is a hint in them as to a course which our own freezing companies mignt adopt in regard to certain big Shows which would he really in the nature of offering a bonus or premium for the encouragement of men who would improve the quality of their beasts.
