SCHOOL CONCERT AT LANSDOWNE.

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. There was a crowded attendance at the concert organised in aid of the Lansdowne School piano fund, which was held in the schoolroom last evening. The concert was a decided success from every point of view, and the- handsome sum of £l4 was realised, 'juris will enable the committee, to complete the purchase of Hie school piano. >A first-class programme was presented, and judging by the frequent applause from those present every item wasthoroughly enjoyed. The- _ opening item was a piano solo hy Miss Hood, entitled "Raindrop Prelude" (Chopin), and was played in masterly style. Mr. G. C. Branson' sang "Trankadiilo," and in response to an imperious encore rendered "The Little Irish Girl." This was followed by a character song entitled "Bismarck Grenadiers" by Miss Harbroe, of Carterton, which so delighted the audience that an encore was I inevitable. Mr. G. Sykes recited ; "Spartacus," a tale of the Roman j gladiators, in splendid style. A. I comic song, "When Father Laid tin- ! Carpet on the Stairs," by Mr. H. j Miller, caused much amusement, and j as an encore he contributed an entirely new and realistic song, "A Rural Railroad Ride." Miss Vera Edwards' tine soprano voice was j heard to distinct advantage in "Sing, Sweet Bird," and in response to an encore this young lady, whose florid passages had been taken with remarkable ease, gave "Eyes that Used to Gaze in Mine." In this number she was also very successful. Then followed a comic duet, entitled "Husband and Wife's .Quarrel," by Miss Johnson and Mr. Harry Hall, which so pleased the audience that they insisted on an encore. Miss Welch, who possesses a strong mezzo-soprano voice, sang "The Liist Rose of Summer" very nicely. The first half of the programme was brought to a conclusion by the rendering of ; a quartette, "Johnnie Schmoker,'' by Messrs. Jago, Elcoate, Iggulden, and Branson, which was re-demanded. The second half opened with a pianoforte solo by Mrs. A. J. Cooper, entitled li ßutterfly Study" (Schumann), and an encore was demanded. Mr. Iggulden, who was in fine voice, sang "Three for Jack," with good effect. The next item was a comic song by Mr. D. Walsh, "I Wonder if Ever," and for an encore he contributa'l' "The Blow that Nearly Killed Father," both items being consider-j ably enjoyed. A very well sung and evenly-balanced item was a quar-! tctte, "Come Where My Love Li ±5 Dreaming," by Messrs. Drummond, Miller, Bell, and Haslam. Mr. Harry Hall, who was given a great reception, delighted the audience wit!r a good comic item, "My Heart s Good, but my Feet Won't let Me," which received a double encore. <.ne of the best items of the.evening was Miss Harbroejs rendering of Tosii's "Good-bye," and for he'r encore 1 umber she'sang "Two Eyes of Grey." The splendid programme was brought to a close by the singing of "Excelsior" as a duet by Messrs. Jago a-ui Branson

• Mrs': Cooler, Misses Hood a id Iggulden, and Messrs. ~>ranson and Elcoate played the accompanim-uHs. Mr.. E.
