"BREEZE" AT TRUST MEETING.
A PROTEST BY MR. DANIELL
MEMBER ASKED TO APOLOGISE. A "breeze" occurred at the meeting of the Masterton Trust Lands Trustees last evening. A letter had been read from an ex-pupil of the District High School, named Matheson, thanking the Trustees for a scholarship grant of £lO. ; Mr. C. E. Daniell drew attention to the fact that the amount had been paid over before being passed by the Trust. He did hot think that a busi-ness-like method. The whole of the grants should be passed by the Trustees before being paid over. The Chairman explained that he had signed the cheque because it had been certified to by Mr. Jackson since, the last meeting, and he understood that it was only a matter -of form, as there Avas a resolution dealing with these grants on the minutes of the Trust. Mr. x~. C. Robinson stated that if ever there was a Chairman who had signed cheques witliout first obtaining the authority of the Trust that Chairman was Mr. Daniell.
Mr. Daniell (heatedly): I object to that remark. I call upon Mr. Robinson to substantiate that statement, or apologise. Mr. Robinson: I cannot prove it just now; but I won't apologise. I'll undertake to produce evidence hi support of my statement at the next meeting. Mr. Daniell (warmly): I musi have a withdrawal. > I won't stand this from a lawyer, or anybody else.
Mr. Robinson: I won't apologise,
Mr. Daniell: 1 appeal to the Chairman !
The Chairman (to Mr. Robinson): You must either withdraw, or stop. Mr. Robinson: _aen Vx. stop. Mr. W. H. Jackson explained that there was a resolution in the minutes of the Trust dacling with scholarship grants. These were made to every child who matriculated at the school. He was himself greatly to blame for not certifying to the pupil having matriculated, in time for last meeting. The pupil had wanted the money, and he thought the Chairman had acted in the interests of all concerned in signing the cheque.
Mr. Daniell said he was not concerned with where the pupil came from. When the Trust made grants for .other purposes tlicy were voted upon. This grant, which Avas not one of emergency, should also have been, voted on. He took it that this was an irregular-payment; The Chairman (warmly): Very well, then, to eiicl-the matter I'll pay the £'lo out of my own pocket.
Mem hers : No ! No! Mr. Jackson: If anvbodv pavs it, I will.
Mr. 11. Krahagcn poured oil on the troubled Maters by moving that the action of the Chairman in signing the .cheque for the £lO be confirmedj but that all future grants.be first passed by the Trust before payment is made.
Mr. Daniell: I'll second that. I was intending to move in the same direction nivself.
The resolution was earired on the voices.
