THE WATER-POWER BILL.
o The Bill introduced in the House of Representatives, having for its object the development of the water power of the Dominion, is one of the most far-reaching measures that have been submitted to Parliament for some years past. The utilisation of the enormous energy in water, which is at present going to waste, for the supply of motive and lighting power to the various industrial centres of the Dominion, is at once an attractive proposition. The wonder is that such a scheme has not been projected before. Vvnat Parliament has now to consider is how far it may reasonably go in the way of practical experiment. Most people will agree that the water power should be a national asset; but that its development should be cautiously undertaken cannot be too strongly emphasised. The Minister of Works will have public opinion behind him only so long as his experiment is conducted on rational and utilitarian lines, and with a true regard for economy.
