SCHOOL GARDENS.
The suggestion recently made that a shield be provided for competition among the schools of the Wairarapa for the best kept garden plot, does not appear to be meeting with much encouragement. The idea is generally entertained that the matter should be taken up by the A. and P. Association. A shield has already been given in the South Wai- j rarapa by Messrs Buchanan and Bunny, but it has yet to be demonstrated whether competition for the trophy is either keen or active. An idea which would more readily commend itself to school teachers, and those charged with the supervision of school plots, would be for the A. and P. Association to make a small donation to the funds of every school which made a satisfactory exhibit to the annual show. By this means competition would be stimulated, the show would ,be more attractive, and the schools would be able to claim a subsidy under . the Manual and Technical Instruction Act upon every pound, or shilling, so donated. This money could be devoted to purchasing agricultural utensils, etc., which would be of great assistance in the conduct of the agricultural plots. 1 —.
