DEFECTIVE SEWAGE.
AN IMPORTANT MATTER
The Borough Engineer submitted a C3mpi"ehensive report to the Masterton Borough Council last evening concerning the complaints, which have been frequent, as to the waterlogged conditions of the public sewers in Cole street and Lincoln road It was, he said, only with considerable difficulty and the adoption of a somewhat questionable method that he had been able, during the whole of . last winter, to partially pass away the sewage from the property abutting on the lower end of Cole street. j After dealing at length with the causes of the trouble, Mr Mansfield : said he had hoped that the drainage proposal would have settled this question, inasmuch as the cost of re-lay-ing the sewers in both streets was included m the scheme. He proposed to re-lay the sewers during the summer weather, ' when the sub-soil water was at its lowest, and immediate steps should, he said, be taken to provide the necessary funds. I Whilst the sewers may be found imperfectly capable of discharging their functions, the Engineer pointed out
that there was also the risk of an outbreak of an infectious disease during the hot weather. The cost of the re-construction was estimated at
£1505 under dry weather conditions,
The Council decided to deter consideration of the matter, which the Mayor said was very important, until .the meeting of the Works Committee.
