.The House of Representatives last night, by 28 votes to 26, reduced ' the vote,of the Finance Department | by £l, as an indication that definite ( salaries should be allotted to the different positions in the Public Service, and that the increments of these salaries should' be made gradually, from the lowest to the •highest position in any Department. The passing of. a resolution of this character will be a masijy pill for a Government which has been in the habit of apportioning salaries according to its own whims and fancies. It remains to be seen if the Government will be prepared to sacrifice its power of patronage, even to please the majority, of members of the I House. I
