BEDFORD DISASTER.
EIGHTEEN LIVES LOST.
VESSEL BADLY DAMAGED.
(Receired August 23, 9.50 a.m.) ;"- • KOBE, August 22. , Eighteen of the crew of the Bedford wea-e drowned. Ihe vessel is in jeopardy. The Bedford was making full speed trials when the accident happened. The inrush of water when she struck caused the death of an engineer, fifteen stokers and two seamen. The remainder of the crew were taken off. , The armoured cruisers Minotaur and Monmouth stood by, but heavy seas forced them to put to sea during the night. The Bedford is full of water to the engine-room bulkhead. Vice-Admiral Sir Alfred Winsloe, Commander-in-Chief on the China Station, reports that there is little chance of salving the vessel.
SYMPATHY OF THE KINC. (Received Last Night, 9.50 o'clock.) LONDON, August 23. In a letter to the Admiralty, his Majesty the King expresses deep regret at the Bedford disaster, and his sympathy with the relatives of the victims.
