FOREST FIRES.
ENORMOUS DAMAGE. MANY LIVES LOST. (Received August 28, 10 a.m.); NEW YORK, August 22. The forest fires in Idaho and Montana are. still raging. One hundred square miles of country is ablaze. Thirty persons were burned to death at Wallace. There are one thousand refugees in the town of Missoula, Montana, One hundred and eighty men pngaged in the Government forestry service are missing. Four towns, including Taft, are in flames, and have been deserted. One hundred persons perished in Idaho. Half the town of Wallace is standing. A solid wall of fire sixty miles in length, extending from Thompson to the Idaho boundary, attacked Belknap, White Pine, Noxon, and Heron.
IN WESTERN MONTANA.
MANY SETTLEMENTS DESTROYED. (Received August 23, 10 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 22. Fires in Western Montana are destroying many isolated settlements, Hundreds of persons were overtaken while in their beds, and are reaching the towns scantily clad. It is expected that the fatalities will be greatly augmented. The Forest Service reports that there is positive evidence that many fires in Oregon were started by incendiaries. FIRES STILL RACING. TWO HUNDRED PERSONS INJURED. MANY MISSING. Received this Morning, 12.30 o'clock. NEWYORK; August 23. The fires at Idaho, Eastern Washington, and Montana, are not yet quenched... The damage, so far, exceeds £300,000. Two hundred persons have been injured, and many are missing.
