OUR "EFFICIENT" RAILWAYS.

MASTERTON EVIDENCE AN INTERESTING EXHIBIT. A Masterton resident, who travelled by the morninz trfin from Masterton to the north on [Monday, was so impressed with the leading article in the Age, dealing with the "efficiency" (?) of the railway service, that he wrote a letter to the editor, and fou&arded a parcel containing a variety of decaying fruit, orange skins, and dirt that he had gathered from'the floor of a first-clasß smoking carriage. "Please note," ha says, "that this is only a sample. The second class carriages were even in a more shocking state, but, for fear of contagion, I refrained from attempting to collect a sample from them. The carriage, or box, referred to came right through from Cro3s' Creek, and was not put on at Masterton. Before obtaining the contents of the packet, I drew the attention of other passengers to the same, and they can vouch for the state of the carriage." "I trust you will be able to ieadj this," says the writer, "but I am not an adapt at writing in these old, bone-shak; iug dog-boxes. The whole of one side of the carriage was wet, caused by the gutter being defective and the water dripping through. Had there been many passengers, all on that side of the carriage woudld have got the contents down the back of their necks,"
