A CONTROVERSIAL MATTER.
GATES ACROSS KOADS. The erection of gates across roads has always been a controversial matter, and persons having occasion to use roads upon which there are gates have been constantly complaining as to the inconvenience of havng to open and shut these gates. A letter was read at yesterday's meeting of the Masterton County Council asking the Council to do away with gates on all roads in the County. The Council lent a sympathetic e?r to the suggestion, but held the opinion that it would be a serious undertaking to give immediate effect to the j oposal. Cr. Murray stated that in bis Riding, Alfredton, where there were a numl er of gates on roads, the settlers in terested were communicated with and had erected fences along the roads, thus doing away with the gates. There were now only seven gates left and these would be non-ex-ifltent at the end of the current summer. Cr. Murray further pointed out that the granting of permission to erect a gate across a road was for the purpose of assisting a settler by not inflicting a heavy burden oa him immediately in the matter of fencing his property. There was, howevt'r.no reason why a gate should remain on a road for a period of years. No definite action was taken, but it is understood that the matter will come up for further consideration of the Council.
