Secretary of State for the Colonies, speaking in the House of Commons, said that the (statements in the German and Austrian press regard the alleged British attitude towards Cret:?— namely, that she was championing Crete against Turkey with the object of acquiring Suda Bay. which had the best anchorage in the island —were entirely untrue. Such statements, added Sir Edward Grey, were likaly to make international good faeling more diffigive offence to a large por- j tion of the Mussulman world.
