ELECTRICAL POWER.

A HUGE SCHEME. At the meeting of the Council of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce, Capt. Preece moved, "that this Council approach the Government and take steps to ascertain tie feasibility of getting electric iight and power from Lake WaikareMoana for the towns of Gisborne, Wairoa, Napier, Hastings, Waipawa, Dannevirke, Woodville, Palmerston, Feilding, and other towns/' Speaking to the motion, Capt, Preece said there was sufficient power to be obtained from the lake to light "fiexwhale of the towns msntioned, and also provide power or electrical energy in Palftierston as well as the other places. He knew lots of firms who would open businesses in Palmerston if cheap power was available. The motion was seconded by Mr Wallace, who suggested that the motioa should not confine attention to a particular lake. Capt. Preece accepted the amendment, and also a .further amendment by Mr Nash that the question ; be referred to the deputation going to Wellington re the native reserves to bring before the Minister. Mr Gardner, who had previously said that he would oppose the motion as premature, said he did not object to it in the amended form, and the motion was than carried with the addition of the amendments stated. Acting on the suggeatiun of the chairman it was decided to write to the Chambers of the towns mentioned before any action was taken in the matter. The Chairman said in support of his suggestion that possibly all these towns might not thank the Chamber for moving on their behalf. It would be difficult if Palmtr3ton only was concerned, but the others might have different ideas. He aso pointed out to Capt. Preece the necessity of making himself fully acquainted with the subject, because upon him rested the' onus of bringing it before the Minister, a responsibility that "Capt. Preece said he would be glad to undertake.
