ROYAL COMMISSION.
CHARGES AGAINST MR HEYBS. Tiio Royal Commission under the Civil Service Act to enquire into certain charges against Mr Peter Heyes, the Commissioner of Taxes, sat continuously last week at Parliament Buildings. The commission consists of Br. Fitchett, Professor Salmond (Solicitor-General) and Mr F. Waidegrave (Under-Secretary for Justice). £!r Stringer, K.C., of Christchurch, appears for the informants, and Mr Skerrett, K.C., and Mr W. J. Napier apscar for Mr Heyes. Voluminous evidence has been taken, but so far only about one-half of?the number of charges has bee:? dealt with. The commission' resumed yesterday morn;ng, at 10 o'clock. Mr Skerrett left for Auckland yesterday to appear at the Supreme Court there for the Auckland Barbour Board, so that this week Mr Napier alone will appear for the Commissi oner of Taxes. The enquiry will probably bet all this week. By leave of the commission, xJr Skerrett addressed the members on Saturday on the case so far as it nas gone, and Mr Napier will deliver an addresa on the whole ease on the conclusion of the evidence.
