SENSATIONAL FINISH

ARNST CAUGHT NAPPING.

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph Capyright, Recieved May 1, 5 p.m. SYDNEY, May 1. Fine weather prevailed for the

rowing of heats ori the Parramatta River in the Parramatta Hundred, and the presence cf Arnst attracted an unusually large crowd. The banks of the river were lined, and the river itself was alive vith boats. The water was in good condition. The first heat resulted in a splendid finish between the Towns Brothers, who held a prominent position from the mile. Theo Towns, with sixty seconds start, beat his brother Norman, 38 seconds, by a length. Felton, 32 second?, was a good third. Harry Pearce gave up at the 2 mile pest. The winner's time was 18min 51sec.

In the second heat F. Matterson, with 5 seconds st&rt, held the lead till passing the mile and a half, when Zeitseh, 46 seconds, went to the front, and at the two miles had two lengths to the good. Fogwell, 18 seconds, made a splendid effort, and overhauled the leaders. Zeitseh landed the winner by a length and a half, a couple of lengths between second and third. J. Arnst also started, but was early out of the race Time,)Bmin 47sec. The third heat proved one of the finest contests seen on the Parramatta River, and was marked by a sensational finish. Petsr Kemp junr., (30 s.conds, overhauled the limit man, Backhouse, 100 seconds, before reaciii ig the half mile, with lorn Kemp, 72 seconds, and G. Matterson, 4ft sees, close behind. At the mile anu a quarter Dick Arnst shot past Backhouse and chased Matterson, who wat> now leading trom the two Kemps. Just before reaching the Gas work at Mortlake , Arnst electrified the crowd by shooting through past Laycock, Tom Kemp and Fisher, and a moment later settled Peter Kemp's chance At two miles he was level with Kemp, and only three lengths astern of Matterson. At two and a quarter miles, Arnst shot ahead, and eased up after overhauling Miiterson. He was apparently taking a well earned breather, when young Matterson, worked a surprise sprint, and before Arnst realised wha had happened, Matterson was right upon him, and a desperate finish sued, resulting in a dead heat, c 5. Kemp, 36st.es, filling third place. Time, 17 min 50sec.
