A balloon ascended at Bitterfeld, in Prussia, when lightning caused it to exylcde, tearing the gas-bag to ribbons. The villagers of Reichensachsen heard a terr'fic crash, but thinking it was the lightning slept till morning, when they discovered the shattered car and fcjr dead bodies.

The aeronauts survived the lightning, as all had their fists clenched, and their face, l ] were convulsed with horror in realising their impending death as they plunged earthwards. Eight ballooniata have been killed in Germany in a fortnight, besides many minor accidents recently. The existence of balloon clubs in every large town accounts for the great number of accidents. The Bitterfeld disaster has decided thi j Imperial Aero Club to issue code precautions. BALLOON ON FIRE. SENSATIONAL PARACHUTE EXPERIENCE. Received April 18, 10 a.m. PERTH, April 18. A balloonist named Selhbe had a sensational experince. His balloon caught fire and escaped before he got a proper hold, arid he was carried 500 feet into the air. However, he managed to cut away the parachute, and fell to within eighty feet of the ground before the parachute opened. He escaped unscathed.

When at a height of 200 ft thunder and a hailstorm prevented them reaching an open space, the balloon bcinß driven among the housetops at Islington. Getting away from there eventually, it fell in a back .garden. The aeronaut ani his companion escaped unhurt.
