LAND SLIDE AT TAUPO.
MASS OF EARTH SLIDES ONE AND A HALF MILES. A YOUNG WOM'AN'S NARROW ESCAPE. By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCLKAND, March 22 Further particulars of the landslide at Waihi show that Tamaiwhana, among others, was making a wild rush for safer ground when a big boulder struck him and knocked him down. He recovered himself and renewed his flight, but the body of the landslip overtook him, and in a few seconds he was overwhelmed.
A young woman named Hoko just managed to get clear of the path of the slide and then sank senseless. She was removed to a place nf safety. As the mass pitched i Un the lake a
tidal wave rose some ten feet high and swept to the opposite ehore, where some children were playing. The children were swept off their feet, but were rescued by adults with some difficulty. All boats and canoes on the lake were washed away.
The natives have all left the village ard taken refuge at Pukawa. The slip started a thousand feet above the lake level, a mile and a half from the shore. Walls are cut put of the country 200 ft deep, and mud 30ft deep covers the road from Tokaanu to Waihi.
