A train at Marshalltown (a large manufacturing town, fifcy miles north-east of Des Moines, the capital of Marshall County in lowa, United States of America. The town has a population of about ten thousand), was derailed when turning a curve at a high speed. The accident caused a sleeping car to telescope a smoking car and a day coach.'
Forty-five persons were killed by the accident, and twenty-one injured.
A fire followed the accident, forcing the rescuers to abaudon their efforts to extricate the unfortunate victims.
