Bardsley joined Smith and a fine partnership resulted in the score being taken to 264 before Smith fell lbw to Greer. He made 107, including eight sixes and five and six fours. Both he and Bardsley played vigorous cricket, and landed the ball in the m«ddle of the crowded grandstand frequently. Mayne joined JBardsley and carried the score to 304, when Bardsley was cleaned bowle:i by Wells, after making 7R attractively*

Manawatu's second innings commenced after a delay by the heavy rain. The visitors commenced by bowling soft stuff from Hopkins and Warne. As the time was getting short.
