TURF NOTES.

THE MASTERTON MEETING. At daybreak yesterday a large number of horses engaged at the Maaterton meeting, which opens today, were worked on the course proper at Opaki. Afterthought was first out on the track, and raD seven furlongs in fair time. Rose Herald and Bernadine finished together after running a good fiva furlongs, and Skye and Embrocation were associated in a seven furlongs go, the firstnamed having the best ox the galiop. Gaelic and Hill Lass were each given a mile at about threequartsr pace. No Trumps and Merrie Emerald were given a mile, the first-pamed appearing to best advantage at the finish, and Aboriginal went strongly over six furlongs. Osiris j md Riflemaid put in a mile at a sound pace, and the latter appeared to finish rather the better of the pair Glenspring, a winner at Dannevir«e, ran a fast half-mile, and Pukewai galloped strongly over six turlonfirs. Mtrrie Rose finished fast over the last stages ot a mile, ami Tumut went once round frctly Bally Shannon and Hilarian w •- associated in a mile, and were joined by Maykoff at the three furlongs post. The latter finished a length in front of Hilarian, while Bally Shannon was some lengths awav. Hilarian was ridden by Emerson, a light-weight, and his gallop was a very "air one. Swimming Belt, Taitoko and Laius were sent toeetner over seven furlongs, and Aberration was ii. front of Kiltie Lass in a six furlongs gallop. FuM Rate put in a satisfactory six furlongs, and Waione and Pakau went a mile at a sound pace. Prancer ran five furlongs in fair time, and Te Roti aorinted three furlongs. The
latter is very well just now. Hinekorangi and Tsushima spriii'cd down
the straight. Curator and First Consul were each given good working exercise over a mile, ai d Kina and Lace Collar passed the post together in a half-mile gallop. Lawn Rose, Knight Commander, Aimwell, Lucretius, Over Rate and Miss Sylvia were allotted light tasks. Critic and Kalypso ran half a mile, the latcer appearing to inoat advantage. Several of the above-named horses will not be raced until to-morrow, the second day of the meeting Merchantman has been scratched for hi« engagements at the fixture. The genera! arrangements in connection with the meeting ar°. very complete, and a really successful meeting is anticipated. MANAWATU RACING CLUB. The autumn meeting of the Mariawatu Racing Club will be held on the Awapuni Racecourse, Palmeraton North, on Wednesday Thursday, 13th and 14th April Nominations close with the secretary, on Friday, ISth March, at 10 p.m.
