FOUND DROWNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. NELSON, March 14. John Whitell Claridge, a bootmaker, of Waimea West, was found drowned in the river near Appleby on Saturday evening. He bad apparently fallen or been jerked out of a trap. At the inquest a vtrciict was returned that death was due to drowning, but there was no evidence how deceased got into the water.
SWINDLING A MAORI.
NAPIEK, March 14
The magistrate characterised as a deliberate attempt to swindle, a case in which James Johnson "tooK down" a Maori in a railway carriage for £ls or £l6, on the show of a poker hand. A fine of £lO and costs was imposed.
ACCIDENTALLY SHOT.
GREYTOWN, March 14,
Samutl Jackson, son of Mr J. J. G. Jackson, of Martini trough, was shot just above the groin yesterday by W. Playle with a pea rifle while out rabbiting. "he lad was brought to Greytown Hospital, where Dr Bey extracted the pellet.

GISBORNE, March 14,
A Maori girl named Ivy Poraare, aged 18, committed suicide at Tologa Bay as the result of a love affair.
