j TOUR OF AUSTRALIANS, THE TEST MATCH. FIRST DAY'S PLAY. NEW ZEALAND ALL OUT FOR 155. AUSTRALIA 4 FOR 210-BARDS-LEY 97. By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, March 11. After rain overnight the test match Australia v. New Zealand opened at noon in beautiful weather, though the wicket was so much in favour of the bowlers that Armstrong, on winning the toss from Keese, sent the New Zealanders in, himself and Whittv having charge of the bowling. The start was disastrous, Siedeberg, Midlane and Hadden leaving in quick succession. Lusk and Reese made a short stand, but they had both gone with tie mtal at five for 52. Sims then set up a strong defence, but he received little assistance until Boxshall joined him, when the total was advanced from 93 to 128. Howden, the last man in, also gave Sims some help, and the innings realised 55. Sims batted splendidly, while Whitty bowled finely on a wicket that just suited him. The Australians did not start yery auspiciously, Mayne leaving at 1 and Simpson at 31. Smith assisted Bardsley, who was missed early, and also bad his wicket hit without displacing the bails, to add 50, and then Armstrong and Bardsley stayed together until just on time, when Bardsley was stumped after an attractively played 97. When stumps were drawn the total was 210 for four wickets. The scores are: —
